Slobodan Milošević (1941 - 2006)

After the war, he continued to have political power : president of Serbia until 1997 but then he became the president of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (which basically comprised Serbia and Montenegro).

  • - 1999 : NATO intervened in Kosovo against his military forces, and the same year he was charged by the ICTY for actions in Kosovo. Charges of genocide in Bosnia were added one year and a half later.
  • - 2000 : He lost elections. The US sent an ultimatum to the new Serbian government, asking him to arrest Milošević by the 31st of march, 2001.
  • - After 33 hours under siege, protected by his personal guards, he was arrested on April 1st, 2001. He was then extradited to The Hague, but with a huge political protest against it.

 

- 2002 : the trial began at The Hague, with Milošević defending himself. He was constantly putting in doubt the legitimacy of the tribunal. The trial implied hundreds of witnesses. The prosecution took two years to present its case in the first part of the trial, which covered the wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo.

- March 11th, 2006 : Milošević was found dead in his prison cell. He died of a heart attack, the Tribunal confirmed.
